Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Political town hall meetings have emerged as vital platforms for fostering dialogue, transparency, and civic engagement between political leaders and citizens. These gatherings provide opportunities for citizens to voice their concerns, ask questions, and receive updates on governance and policy implementation. In Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Kano State, town hall meetings have been instrumental in bridging the gap between government representatives and the populace, particularly in addressing local issues and promoting accountability. According to Abdullahi and Yusuf (2023), such meetings encourage active participation in governance, build trust, and enhance the democratic process. However, their effectiveness in fostering genuine civic engagement often depends on factors such as inclusivity, communication strategies, and follow-up actions. This study examines the impact of political town hall meetings on civic engagement in Kano Municipal, focusing on their benefits, challenges, and areas for improvement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential of political town hall meetings to enhance civic engagement, their impact in Kano Municipal is often limited by issues such as poor organization, lack of inclusivity, and inadequate follow-through on discussed issues. These challenges can lead to citizen apathy, mistrust, and reduced participation in governance. While studies have explored the role of town hall meetings in democratic governance, limited research focuses on their specific impact on civic engagement in Kano Municipal Local Government Area (Ahmed & Bello, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the impact of political town hall meetings on civic engagement in Kano Municipal.
